PROMOTING high architectural and planning standards

In normal times, the Society runs a comprehensive programme of events throughout the year. These include talks, discussion meetings, visits to places of interest and an annual lecture by a keynote speaker.

They also include the local organisation of Heritage Open Days each September, which provide the opportunity to visit some of the most interesting buildings in the town as well as walks, talks and exhibitions.

However, the Covid-19 crisis has forced us to suspend our normal programme. Though we did manage to run a very limited range of Heritage Open Day events last September, which were complemented by a number of presentations and interviews made available online.

Much of this online material about some of the town’s most fascinating buildings and features remains available to view and download on our Heritage Open Days page.

Our latest news

Agora Group

The Society’s Agora Group is working closely with both Cheltenham Borough Council and Cheltenham BID to support appropriate changes of use and to encourage investors and landlords to do more to improve the look of any vacant properties. More details on this work can be found on the Agora Group page.

Successful Streets Group

Fed up with getting nowhere with its previous attempts to draw attention to the poor condition of the public realm in our High Street, the Civic Society’s Successful Streets Group (SSG) is now upping the ante.

SSG sees little point in updating its three-year-old list of 253 issues of concern such as broken paving, grubby bins, cluttered signage and street furniture only to see few – if any – improvements.

Planning white paper

Working with other local civic societies, the Society has prepared and submitted a detailed response to the government’s white paper proposing a major revamp of England’s planning system to introduce a zonal system. See our News page to read more.
